The Songs
One of the most recognizable elements of Native expression is the Pow-wow. But very few people outside the culture understand it. They do not understand the significance of the songs and the dances behind Pow-wow; they do not understand the rites and ceremonies contained within a pow-wow. They do not understand the meaning of the clans, or why Indian people dance. The Pow Wow Trail series will explore the true meaning, beyond the feathers and beads. Culture lives within the people; it is expressed through those who practice and participate in these celebrations.
Pow-wows are nothing without the songs. They carry the stories, which in turn carry the culture. Some stories tell of great exploits, acts of bravery, and even stories that express the simple pleasures in life. The words themselves are secondary for it is the sound that is heard by the spirits of all living creatures. The music possesses a mystical element within it. Music is said to touch the soul, and it is this, the songs and the beat of the drum appeal to. Though the words have been have been lost, the meanings behind the songs survive.
